In a shocking development a Cardiff man has been caught red-handed abusing the English language.
Craig Bellamy, 39, from Trowbridge, is tonight having to answer accusations that he wantonly made a schoolboy howler by misunderstanding the meaning of the well-known verb “refute”.
Earlier, he had responded to allegations pertaining to his job as Cardiff City FC Under-18s coach by stating “I categorically refute them”, when he clearly meant “rebut”, “contest” or even “deny”.
Bellamy has agreed to temporarily step down from his role while he takes an awareness course and learns that “refute” means “disprove”.
