Dad passed away peacefully today. I’m collecting his stuff from the hospital x
He was two weeks short of his 97th birthday.
I wrote a piece to mark this moment a good 10 years ago, and it has been waiting among my many WordPress unpublished drafts ever since. But now the time has actually arrived I somehow feel disinclined to click the ‘publish’ button (yet). Instead, I think I’ll give him the sort of send-off he would appreciate:

Finally……. you’re an orphan 💚💐
I’ve examined the life insurance industry’s actuary tables – accurate to the last day since premiums are based on the figures. They show that he outlived 99.99% of all the others born in 1924 in the UK. This means hardly any others in the entire history of humanity have reached orphan status as late in life as me! Off the top of my head, I can only think of one other example: Charles Windsor – and both his are still alive and kicking!
