What a woebegone world

With apologies to Louis Armstrong (1901-1971) and Bob Thiele (1922-1996) & George Weiss (1921-2010)

I see forests burn
And heat domes fry,
Foretastes of doom
For you and I,
And I think to myself
What a woebegone world.

I see nature wrecked
Under skies of smoke
As day turns to night
And poor people choke,
And I think to myself
What a terrible world.

The wicked and the stupid,
So ugly and so cruel,
Are guilty of mass murder
And criminal misrule.
I see billionaire liars
Saying “Everything’s great.”
They’re really saying
“Spread the hate.”

I see children now
Who will not grow.
There won’t be an Earth
For them to know,
And I think to myself
What a wretched old world.

Yes, I think to myself
What a woebegone world.

Oh yeah.
